Edinburgh
We are in Edinburgh, Scotland. We arrived yesterday late afternoon. We took a bus from Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough (yes, the Scarborough in the Simon & Garfunkel cover of an old English ballad), then a train to York and finally a train to Edinburgh. The train arrived about an hour later than scheduled due to a problem with the overhead wires. Some of you may remember that on our first day in the UK, the train we were supposed to take from Edinburgh to Carlisle had a problem with the overhead wires. Fortunately, we do not have any more train travel planned.
I do not want to discourage anyone from visiting Edinburgh, but be prepared for hordes of tourists and all the gimmicks and trinkets their presence generates. There is much more to Edinburgh than the Old Town area, but in some ways, it is the most interesting from a historical and photographic standpoint. However, its association with the Harry Potter novels has warped its character. Portions of it remind me of a theme park!
The most interesting place we visited on our walk around after dinner (Spanish tapas restaurant—a welcome break from pub food!) was the Grey Friars Graveyard. I have attached some quick Hipstamatic-edited photos. I hope to get back when the light is better. It might seem ghoulish that I have taken so many photos of graveyards/cemeteries, but they are so interesting from a photographic perspective!
I am sure there will be more from Edinburgh tomorrow.
