Day 2
After a leisurely breakfast, we headed off to walk the St. Bees Head portion of the first day's hike—just about 6 1/2 miles. It was a fantastic walk along the cliffs with views of the Irish Sea. In the mist, we could make out the mountains of the Isle of Man. It was windy and cool most of the day, with periods of sunshine. The wind was strong enough to cause some unsteadiness, which was of concern as we walked very close to the cliff's edge.
St. Bees Head is a bird sanctuary. At several points, we could see the cliff walls, which were full of nesting Razorbills, Gulls and Seagulls—thousands of birds!
We had our first taste of rain for the last mile or so — the wind was much stronger this evening when we walked down to the beach after dinner. You can see how the wind is stirring up the water in the last photo in today's set. The wind is bringing in more rain for tomorrow, our first real day of hiking.
Last night, after our beach walk, we had a Laphroaig whisky in the pub downstairs, and tonight, we had a Jura whisky in the pub across the street.
