Day 6 - June 8th, Patterdale

Rest Day

We arranged for a taxi to take us to Patterdale, the destination of the walk we skipped. Patterdale is close to one of the lakes, Ullswater, in the Lake District Nationa Park. We were at leisure most of the day, so we rode on one of the ferries that take passengers to various stops along the shore. It was an hour's ride from one end of the lake ("water") and back. It was Sunday, so there were canoes, inflatables, motorboats, sailboarders and sailboats out on the water. A regatta was going on, and the wind was up, so the sailboats often had their spinnakers up - they were flying.

Back in town, there was a CrossFit competition going on—it was great people-watching. The competitors were generally very large and fit men and women, all of them wearing spandex-style clothing when competing. We noticed that there seemed to be a "uniform" for the women when not competing—mid-calf-length down-style coats, lots of makeup, very long eyelashes and lots of tattoos. We visited the local church and cemetery on the way to our lodging. I promise I am not cemetery obsessed; in these small villages, the church and cemetery are among the best locations for photography.

We checked into our lodging, a lovely bed and breakfast along the Goldrill Beck (river). We had a relaxing late afternoon watching birds and hoping to see a red squirrel—no luck! Later, we had dinner at the White Stag pub, where Wordsworth heard of Admiral Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Today, we are taking another taxi to Shap. I hope that a couple of days of rest will allow my knee to recover, and we can resume our walk as we head into the Yorkshire Dales.
